However, sometimes the more satisfying wins come from customers who were originally disappointed in their provider. A positive review in these circumstances underscores the ability to listen to tough feedback.

It also highlights the importance of making amends when mistakes happen.

That’s what motivated our Division President, Chris, to reach out to homeowner Joseph R. Joseph had given us a low rating for what appeared to be an unresolved roof leak, and Chris wanted to make things right.

So, he took the feedback to heart and investigated the situation.

As it turned out, the leak was completely unrelated to our roofing work. And the source would’ve gone undetected if we’d been unwilling to listen to Joseph’s concerns. We didn’t earn five stars, but we had the satisfaction of knowing we’d helped him resolve a serious household mystery.

Joseph Contacts Us For A Roof Repair

Joseph is a veteran living on a fixed income. Not long before Hurricane Beryl hit in 2024, he contacted 314 Roofing. We quickly discovered his roof was in bad shape and needed a lot of help.

Its primary materials were older three-tab shingles, which don’t typically fare well in the storm-prone Houston area. In these circumstances, we recommend upgrading to tougher modern materials if at all possible.

However, Joseph couldn’t afford a roof replacement. So, we undertook a major repair, instead.

As always, we carried out this roofing service with quality materials and a meticulous eye for detail. To all appearances, it was a job well done.

Beryl Blows Through And Joseph Reports A Roof Leak

A few weeks after Beryl blew through, Joseph contacted us again. He informed us that his recently repaired roof was now leaking.

To be honest, we weren’t surprised. Even the toughest roofs can take serious damage in a hurricane. And Joseph’s roof was far from optimal.

So, we put together a replacement proposal that we hoped would fit his budget. But Joseph told us once more he simply couldn’t afford it. He also asked us if there was any way we could help him.

We felt bad for Joseph. We also felt stuck between a rock and a hard place. There was nothing we could really do short of replacing the roof.

Another Call And A Review Of Our Roofing Services

Joseph was understandably frustrated. Not long afterward, he called us back to tell us the news. Every time it rained, water entered his home through what he was sure was an unaddressed roof leak.

And like a lot of unhappy customers in today’s world, Joseph did something else. He left us a one-star review on Yelp.

It was then that Division President Chris took a personal interest in the situation. He wanted to see for himself how things had gotten to this point. So, he made arrangements to visit Joseph at his home.

Chris Performs A Targeted Roof Inspection

On the appointed day, Chris arrived with one of 314 Roofing’s area managers. Their goal was to uncover the source of the leak once and for all.

Chris got up in the home’s attic and instructed the manager to douse the roof with a hose. This is a reliable way to detect leaky spots. But Chris didn’t see a leak, even after the manager hosed down every shingle.

It was then that Chris had an idea. In the attic, he could see a vent pipe leading down from the roof to the home’s interior below. He directed the manager to get up on the roof and point the water hose directly into the vent’s opening.

A Cause Unrelated To Our Roofing Repair Work

When the water entered the pipe, Chris immediately spotted the problem. The glue on the pipe’s PVC fittings had failed. So, every time it rained, water spilled through the loose joints and caused leaking beneath the roofline!

In other words, the roof wasn’t the issue. It was the defective vent pipe running through the roof and into Joseph’s home.

Joseph Reassesses Us As Roofing Service Providers

Chris took some video footage to fully document the situation. He then showed this footage to Joseph and recommended that he contact a plumber ASAP.

Needless to say, Joseph was happy to know that an end to the problem was in sight. He thanked us for taking the time to find out what was really happening.

It was then that Chris asked him – could he possibly update his original review to reflect our efforts to resolve the problem? Joseph readily agreed.

Did we end up with a coveted five-star review? No. Joseph still wasn’t happy about the whole ordeal.

But he did upgrade us to three stars. And all things considered, it’s the most rewarding three-star review we’ve ever received!
